Ursula von der Leyen elected as President of the Commission

On 16th July the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Ms von der Leyen won 383 votes, which is just slightly more than the absolute majority of 374 votes she needed to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker. Presently the German Defence Minister, Ms von der Leyen will be the first woman to occupy this post. She will enter office on 1st November for a mandate of five years.
