Journalist Lara Marlowe published an article in the Irish daily « The Irish Times » on 17th May 2014 analysing the ambivalent development of France within the EU – from being a founding Member to a eurosceptic. She illustrates her ideas quoting MEP Sylvie Goulard, former Foreign Minister Hubert Védrine and also Thierry Chopin – Studies Director at the Robert Schuman Foundation – who states « France is both an engine and an impediment to European integration. » In Thierry Chopin’s opinion the present rise of euroscepticism can notably be explained by the fact that the economic crisis has forced European governments to regulate the economic shortfalls inherent to the Maastricht and Lisbon Treaties without regulating the political shortfalls. In this sense « this has caused the mistrust of the French population. » Thierry Chopin suggests that although economic and budgetary integration is continuing it is vital for political integration to occur also.

La journaliste Lara Marlowe a publié le 17 mai 2014 dans le quotidien irlandais « The Irish Times » un article analysant l’évolution ambivalente de la France au sein de l’Union européenne, entre Etat fondateur et eurosceptique. Elle illustre ses propos en citant, aux côtés de l’eurodéputée Sylvie Goulard et l’ancien ministre des Affaires étrangères Hubert Védrine, Thierry Chopin, directeur des études de la Fondation Robert Schuman, selon qui « la France est à la fois le moteur et le frein de l’intégration européenne ». Pour Thierry Chopin, la montée actuelle des euroscepticismes s’explique notamment par le fait que la crise économique a conduit les gouvernements européens à régler les failles économiques des traités de Maastricht et de Lisbonne, sans pour autant en régler les failles politiques. En ce sens, « cela a provoqué la méfiance de la population française ». Pour Thierry Chopin, si l’intégration économique et budgétaire se poursuit, il est nécessaire que l’intégration politique se fasse également.
